Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is concentrated with platelets from your own blood. Platelets are a naturally occurring substance in your blood that plays an essential role in clotting. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains several growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate the healing of bone and soft tissue. PRP has been used in orthopedics for decades and more recently it has been used for aesthetic purposes in the face and scalp. There have not been double-blind studies about the long-term results and benefits of PRP in the skin or scalp. PRP has been shown, in unscientific observations, to have overall rejuvenating effects on the skin as in improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles, increasing skin volume, strengthening existing hair follicles, and diminishing scars. Think of it like putting fertilizer on your grass…it helps it be its best.
Results are generally visible at three weeks and continue to improve gradually over the next three to six months with improvement in texture and tone. Generally, one to three treatments are advised, however, more may be indicated in some individuals. Current data shows results may last 18-24 months. Once your results are achieved, yearly maintenance treatments may be required to maintain results.
For scalp hair rejuvenation we use biologic agents (A cell) with PRP and a booster of PRP 2 months following the first injections. Maintenance treatments will not be necessary for 2-3 years after the booster. Hormone balance and discontinuing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for 12-14 days prior to treatment is very important.
